Core Strategy (100% Annual Returns)
Hightower Portfolio Strategy (100% annual returns)
The Hightower Portfolio is an ultra-long-term options strategy that invests in 2-year+ expiring leap options with the goal of using high internal leverage to minimize risk and maximize returns. The foundation of the Hightower Portfolio is rooted in the Samwise Strategy and incorporates key concepts from Chapters 1-6 of our Core Investment Principles. However, unlike Arryn, Lannister and Stark long-term potions portfolio, Hightower DOES NOT closely adheres to the Four (4) Part Framework, but share the same ultimate objective of returning 100% annually on average.
Getting Long & Remaining Long at ALL-TIMES
Here is precisely how the Hightower Portfolio strives to produce its 100% annual returns. First, unlike the other Samwise Portfolios, Hightower DOES NOT wait to make its purchases during major stock market corrections as outlined in the Samwise Four (4) Part Framework, Rule #2 of Samwise Rules of Investing and Chapter 5 of our Core Investment Principles. In fact, the Hightower Portfolio will deploy all of its capital on the day it launches regardless of where the market is currently trading. The strategy is not dependent on making entries during market corrections. By deploying capital immediately, the strategy begins operating from day one.
Get a more in-depth look at the Hightower Strategy by reading our detailed post on the launch of the portfolio. Feel free to post comments and ask questions:
The Hightower Strategy: An In-Depth Look at the New Portfolio (coming soon!)
high quality names means high Predictability & consistency
By purchasing long-duration in-the-money leap options in high-quality names, the Hightower Portfolio is able to use significant inherent leverage to enhance returns at a reduced risk premium. The portfolio invests almost exclusively in high to moderate growth large-cap names, such as Apple and Nvidia, which trade in highly predictable patterns. These stocks are particularly attractive because they are easier to forecast—analyst targets are generally met, and we can accurately predict where these stocks will be 1 to 2 years out into the future.
Additionally, the core capital of the Hightower Portfolio is always invested in the NASDAQ-100, ensuring strong diversification across the tech sector and providing exposure to a broad array of top-performing companies.
Embrace the Bull, Hedge the Bear (Rule 8)
Third, and most importantly, the key to producing generational wealth is deploying a strategy that remains long at all times while continuously hedging out the risk of a potential bear market that can strike at anytime. The Hightower Portfolio is a long only strategy and remains long at all times. Once the portfolio gets long, it stays long. It faces down bear markets with hedging. That is the key to long-term success in the stock market. Hedge the down years, ride the positive years higher.
One key difference between Hightower and the other leaps portfolios (Arryn, Lannister & Stark) is that Hightower truly remains long at all times. If it gets pushed to the sidelines on a covered call sale, it immediately gets right back into the market.
Risk Management Strategy
risk Management strategy
The Hightower Portfolio aims to reduce risk in three significant ways. First, by adhering to the 2-year rule outlined in Chapter 1 of our Core Investment Principles, the Hightower Portfolio ensures that it holds positions with long enough durations to weather almost any storm. Second, by selling covered calls and other option premium against our positions, the Hightower Portfolio reduces risk through cost-basis reduction. Third, by purchasing 1-year expiring put options during major market rallies, the portfolio directly hedges out the ongoing annual risk of bear markets, crashes and other exogenous events.
Reducing Risk by Selling Covered Calls
By strategically following Part 3 of the Samwise Framework, the Hightower Portfolio reduces the cost-basis of each position by selling “premium” and/or “covered calls” against its long positions during market rallies. Doing so also reduces risk by indirectly reducing the capital allocation of various positions.
One key difference between Hightower and the other leaps portfolio (Arryn, Stark & Lannister) is that Hightower does not wait to strategically re-enter the market if ever called away. Capital is immediately redeployed anytime profits are taken.
Using 1-year Puts to Hedge During rallies
As with other Samwise Portfolios, the Hightower Portfolio follows Part 2 of the 4-Part Framework and uses intermediate-term rallies as an opportunity to purchase 1-year expiring put hedges to protect the portfolio against crashes, bear markets another exogenous events. The puts are rolled forward during the final quarter of the fiscal year or during periods where the stock markets has sustained major rallies thereby resulting in large build-in profits for the portfolio.
The put hedge is critically important to remaining long the market as indicated by Rule 8’s “Embrace the Bull, Hedge the Bear” investment maxim. Puts ensure the portfolio is protected during periods of market volatility while still benefiting from long-term growth. By rolling our hedges forward, the Hightower Portfolio effectively locks in profits while maintaining the ability to participate in future market gains, reinforcing its strategy of always staying long with minimal risk exposure.
